A new chapter for Brown Fused Alumina: ROMCO and Almatis join hands

ROMCO and Almatis have joined forces in Brown Fused Alumina (BFA), bringing together ROMCO’s established fused alumina manufacturing capabilities in India with Almatis’ global sales, technical service and distribution network. The two companies signed a term sheet on September 16, 2026, during the International Colloquium on Refractories in Aachen, Germany, setting out the principles for a long-term strategic partnership. Definitive agreements will follow the ongoing commercial and technical discussions.

For customers, the announcement is about more than another name entering the BFA supply landscape. It brings a manufacturing base in India into an established international specialty alumina network, with the potential to connect product availability with technical and commercial support across markets.

Brown Fused Alumina: A material built for demanding applications

Brown Fused Alumina is hardly a new material for the refractory industry. Its combination of hardness, thermal stability and durability has made it a familiar choice for applications exposed to demanding temperatures and operating conditions.

But familiarity does not make the material any less exacting. Refractory manufacturers still need chemistry and particle size to remain consistent, while dependable supply can be just as important when production schedules leave little room for disruption.

That is part of what makes the new partnership interesting. BFA may be a well-established material, but supplying it consistently across markets requires manufacturing experience as well as the infrastructure to support customers beyond the factory gate.

ROMCO: Built around fused alumina

Founded in 1987, ROMCO is an Indian manufacturer of fused alumina products for refractory and industrial applications, with its manufacturing operations in Odisha. The company produces both white fused alumina and Brown Fused Alumina and has built its business around fused alumina manufacturing.

That experience is central to the partnership. ROMCO already has the manufacturing base needed to produce BFA; what changes with the proposed collaboration is the reach around it.

There is another side to the manufacturing story, too. ROMCO has highlighted process control, quality management and traceability as part of its approach, alongside initiatives covering areas such as energy efficiency, dust management, material recovery and water recycling. These are increasingly relevant considerations for industrial mineral producers, particularly as customers pay closer attention to consistency, resource use and supply-chain resilience.

The proposed partnership gives ROMCO a way to take that manufacturing capability into a wider international market through Almatis’ sales and distribution network.

So, why Almatis?

The company has more than a century of alumina expertise and a broad portfolio of specialty alumina and alumina-based products. Its range includes tabular, calcined and reactive aluminas, polishing aluminas, calcium aluminate cements, dispersing aluminas and spinels, serving industries that include refractories, ceramics and polishing.

Its refractory business already covers a wide range of materials and applications, from aggregates and binders to calcined and reactive aluminas. That gives Almatis an established understanding of the technical requirements that sit behind refractory raw material choices.

BFA therefore represents an addition to an existing specialty alumina portfolio, rather than a move into an entirely unfamiliar category. Almatis describes it as the second new material added to its portfolio, following the expansion of its Calcium Aluminate Cement portfolio through its strategic partnership with Çimsa in 2025.

For ROMCO, the attraction is clear: its BFA manufacturing capabilities can be connected to Almatis’ international sales, technical service and distribution infrastructure. For Almatis, the partnership adds Brown Fused Alumina to an already broad offering for refractory customers.

What comes next?

The September announcement is still a step towards a broader collaboration, with definitive agreements subject to further commercial and technical discussions.

What is clear already is the complementary nature of the two businesses.

ROMCO brings nearly four decades of fused alumina manufacturing experience and an established production base in India. Almatis brings more than a century of specialty alumina expertise, together with global sales, technical service and distribution capabilities.

For a material as established as Brown Fused Alumina, that makes the partnership an interesting development – not because BFA itself is new, but because the way it reaches customers may be about to change.
